Why 3v3 Small-Sided Soccer Is Important To Player Development

3 v 3 small-sided soccer presents players with a variety of “game within the game” situations. These situations display many aspects of the game that are difficult to duplicate in structured formatted practice sessions.

For example, the “free-style” nature of the 3 v 3 game provides the opportunity for players to utilize close individual ball skills by forcing them into constant limited time and space scenarios.  Conversely, in 6v6, 8v8, or 11v11 systems, these high pressure decision-making situations are only presented on a reduced scale.  In the 3 v 3 game, the high frequency of these game situations enables players to receive additional touches and provides them with more opportunities to use the skills that have been taught during the structured practice sessions.

From a coach’s point of view, 3 v 3 small-sided soccer also allows her/him to organize and observe very quickly and instruct on a minimal basis.  This results in more “freedom” on the player’s part with more opportunities to test their creativity.  Only when the session has concluded does the coach then gather the players for a short period of time to refine some aspect of their individual game.

Taking everything into consideration, it is easy to see why 3 v 3 small-sided soccer certainly complements structured formatted practice sessions.  It also helps accelerate the development of the player’s individual ball skills, those skills that they will need as they mature through the 6v6, 8v8 and 11v11 systems.
